I recently saw that my blog pops up in the top 10 search results on Google for the term “Organising a Roller Derby Event”. But I don’t have a post on organising a Roller Derby Event, because I usually organise events for work only. This involves organising TEDx events & workshops :)
I’m currently a Roller Girl in training (fresh meat), and I also love organising events, so I thought I might see if I can help those of you who are searching for this info and stumble across my blog.
When I organise events there are a number of things that work well, no matter what the event:
1. Advertise through social networks – it’s free and really fast way to get ‘word-of-mouth’ advertising working to your advantage.
2. Find a great location. Location will affect so many things, such as the number of tickets you can sell as well as the atmosphere of the event. In Sydney Roller Derby events are held at the Hordern Pavillion which is a huge and amazing venue! In Melbourne Roller Derby bouts are held at Puckhandlers in Reservoir. It’s a small venue and the last event sold out in only 2 hours!
3. Tickets – sell a limited number of tickets. Free services such as EventBrite.com are great!
4. Build excitement. Leading up to the event post about it and update all of the social media channels you are using such as Facebook, Myspace & Twitter.
5. Posters. I don’t think they really work so much anymore, and it’s not so great for the environment. Much better to encourage fans to share a promo video on their friends Facebook walls! :)
I hope your Roller Derby Event goes well!
:)
