How to organise a TEDx event at work!

One of the most awesome things I have done this year is organise and run TEDx events at my work :)

It’s so easy to do, anyone can do it!

If you’re not sure what a TEDx event is please check out this link: http://www.ted.com/tedx

TEDx at work in 10 easy steps.

1. Get a group of colleagues together who love TED to brainstorm.

2. Choose a theme for each of your TEDx events (we choose our themes based on what is trending on our Yammer).

3. Plan to run it frequently, but not too frequently. We have found that once every two months works great.

4. Find a room that has lots of seats and a projector / sound system.

6.Find one great speaker that matches your theme and call / email them or chat to them on Twitter. Ask them to come along, we have organised speakers from Google, Deloitte Digital and Tennis Australia.

7. Find two short TED videos (under 5min) that match the theme.

8.Send out an invitation through social media channels (e.g. Yammer), allow users to self register (e.g. Sharepoint / Google Spreadsheet).

9. Send out a meeting invite to all attendees who have registered and book the time into your attendees calendars.

10. Make a small treat for your attendees and enjoy the day!

TEDx is great at work because we can experiment and learn. We can try something new and see what works. We get to hear from 3 amazing speakers without even having to leave our building….!

If you want to organise a TEDx at your work let me know,

I’m happy to pass on what we have learnt :)

Keep Tinkering!

Last week for the App My State comp!

I have been thinking about what sort of apps I might like to create before the comp closes on Friday….

I’ve got loads of different ideas. A lot of them are around recycling and the environment.

Trying to think “What sort of an app do people want to use?”.

If you missed out on Vichack and are interested in going along to a hack day / hackathon you will be happy to hear we have started a monthly event called:

Let’s Hack Melbourne

This first event on June 6 is sold out (super quick 3 days!) but we will be planning another in July!

App 6 – Let’s Help!

Vote 4 Volunteering! Created by @jessukotic@tammybutow We can all make a difference…but we want to know what you WANT to do to help….vote it up and make it heard! :)

This app asks users to think of what they would like to do in terms of volunteering opportunities. It enables users to add entries for specific skills they hold so that these can be matched to opportunities that can be organised. This app builds a social community through encouraging users to submit their ideal volunteering opportunities. They can then be recommended to attend specific events by other users and volunteer organisations.

The Volunteer Map also allows the user to search for local volunteer organisations to obtain further information.

App 5 – my future victoria!

My Future Victoria allows users to register/login, submit ideas, vote, comment, share ideas to Facebook/Twitter/Buzz and explore Victorian data from data.vic.gov.au using Google Maps. The aim of this web application is to encourage Victorian’s to:

1. Investigate Raw Data

2. Analyse Information – check out the Google Map

3. Brainstorm a great idea

4. Submit your idea and provide feedback/vote on other ideas

5. Recruit volunteers & sponsors for your idea (share your ideas through Twitter, Facebook and Buzz)

6. Give your idea wings in 2010. Aim for Action!

App4 Week 4

I wanted to have a play with Google Earth…

So my idea was to get a dataset of postcodes and display it on a webpage so that users didn’t have to have the google earth application.

I then wanted users to be able to search for a location and find the postcode for that location by clicking on the map.

All working!

Next I want to add interactivity to it, because I need to be able to have the user provide some sort of service…e.g crowdsourcing information.

App 3 Week 3

Ok so I was sick for ages, like for half this week which made it a bit hard to make an app!

So this is my app created in completely one day – from concept to rollout..

I had to go with something that would be easy and quick but I still wanted it to be useful and look ok! :P

It’s called Next Stop NSW – It helps you find out how long you have to live, and what you should do before you die in NSW! :p

Here it is: http://bit.ly/9Pvdwe

Ciao!
